Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Florissant District Curriculum

Communication Arts starts students off in elementary grades with strong vocabulary skills, word recognition, and a fundamental reading foundation. Regular practice with grammar usage and the analysis of works of fiction and nonfiction begin in the early grades as well. In upper grades, coursework diversification builds on the early grade skills, allowing students to analyze and critique literary works, while gaining confidence in their own critical writing skills.

Science skills are supported in early grades with a solid foundation in the principles of matter, energy, force and motion. Living organisms and ecological systems are explored in early grades with hands-on activities that support an early understanding of the scientific method and observation skills. Human impact on the environment and the impact of scientific development are key strands that support student interest. Upper grades support student career interests in the sciences, agriculture and technology through specialized career pathways.

Chalk Talk: What Is Constructivist Learning

The theory of constructivism states that we learn best by reflecting and thinking about our prior experiences. Through this window of past experience, we can understand the world around us in a way that is unique to ourselves. In order to structure learning in a room full of diverse learning styles, it is helpful to bring in a topic to which most students can relate. This engages our learning process, and brings our own ideas to the table from the applicability of our own experiences. Learning is truly the most meaningful when it has incorporated our own ideas, and when we have generated our own learning rather than simply repeating or memorizing what someone else has told us. Hands-on projects and problem solving, plus analysis and prediction of answers to open-ended questions, helps create dialogue and experiences that go beyond the classroom.
