Fort Erie District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Ontario Curriculum is used in Fort Erie’s schools as the guideline for teaching, learning, and assessments in each subject. Expectations for student learning are specified on a grade level basis, and students are expected to become proficient in these skills in order to be prepared for the next year. Assessments used to measure subject-area proficiency are able to show the areas of strength and weakness for each student and can be used to plan appropriate instruction. Each subject aims to develop certain abilities, or core competencies, for students.

We currently cover the following Fort Erie-area school districts: Niagara Catholic District School Board and District School Board of Niagara.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fort Erie District Curriculum

The core competencies focused on in the curriculum consist of literacy skills, mathematic and scientific reasoning, historical perspective, intercultural understanding, and the ability for self-expression. As students move into their secondary school years, they will find themselves combining these abilities in their more advanced courses or within some of the specialized programs available.

Additionally, there are programs that help students develop their personal competencies. Through the arts programs, students develop the ability to explain their artwork, both in terms of the technical means by which they produced it, and the philosophical meanings that underlie it. Students participate in basic critiques of their work as well, learning how to identify both strengths and weaknesses in their work. This ability to review and reflect on one's own work is also a competency that assists all students in the projects and learning they take on.

Chalk Talk: What Is the Writing Process?

The writing process refers to the steps that a writer takes to generate a complete, final version of a piece of writing. The steps involved include brainstorming or pre-writing, writing, revising, and editing. While these four steps follow a logical progression, as this is an individual process, the steps can be interchangeable. For instance, a student may start off by writing and then use that as a basis for brainstorming. Some students may choose to edit before revising, or vice versa. In writing, the important thing is to develop the habit of each of these parts of the process as they contribute to the development of effective written work.
