Fountain District and Curriculum

The Fountain-Fort Carson School District adheres to the Colorado Academic Standards which provide a comprehensive framework for learning in all core subjects, electives, and for outcomes beyond graduation. The goals are many from teaching content and procedural knowledge, to the development of critical thinking skills, to sure students see the connections between what they are learning and how things work in the real world. Ultimately, students should graduate feeling prepared for post-secondary academic and professional success.

We currently cover the following Fountain-area school district: Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fountain District Curriculum

The Math curriculum emphasizes the areas of numeracy, operations, algebra, geometry, and data analysis and statistics. Early learning begins by introducing students to different skills within each like pattern recognition or shapes and measurement, and these are built on during the middle school years. Students work with equations, formulas, and theorems and become able to create models that help them solve both real world challenges.

The Language Arts curriculum oversees the literacy and communication skills development of students as they will be applied in all subject area learning. Reading strategies are taught with both fiction and non-fiction so that students are able to understand the different goals within different works. Writing is taught so that students learn how to express themselves clearly and persuasively, using a strong voice and having a command of the language.

Chalk Talk: Factors in Academic Success

Students who are academically successful are not just so because they know how to study well or are just naturally smart; many students who are academically successful are so because of their ability to make the most out of the resources available to them. For instance, students who have a strong understanding of the resources available at local libraries and know how to seek out knowledge and information, have an edge on academic success. When students join local clubs, sports teams, or extraucrriculars, they also gain in their academic edge because they have an area where interest and enjoyment mix and they are able to define their success in an arena of their choosing. Students should be encouraged from an early age to learn about what resources are available and how to use them.
