Chalk Talk: How to Choose a Major

If your child is heading off to college, they may be struggling with making a decision about what their major will be. Although this can induce some panic, there is no hard and fast rule that students must declare a major before they arrive at college. To the contrary, many educational experts say that it is perfectly fine for college students to wait until the end of their first year or even the beginning of their second year of college to declare a major. Doing so gives students some time to explore various disciplines, which may help them clarify the subject areas that offer them the most interest. Putting off the decision to declare a major also gives students the chance to speak with other students, professors, their advisor, and other trusted sources to get a clearer picture of what employment opportunities are available for each of their potential majors.
