Fredericksburg District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Fredericksburg City Public Schools offer their students an excellent education by allowing teachers creative freedom as they teach according to the Virginia Standards of Learning. The standards provide a series of objectives which need to be met by the students in order to develop their true knowledge in the subject. The curriculum provides rigorous standards for both core subject learning and other elective courses.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fredericksburg District Curriculum

The Science curriculum at Fredericksburg City Public Schools begins as the students learn about their world in imaginative ways. In third grade, students learn about soil levels through an edible sample made of cookies, cocoa cereal and chocolate pudding. They also have a unit on biomes that crosses the curriculum. This method of teaching continues in middle school as students learn about energy observing common objects and they have fun creating atom models made from pancakes.

Fun and education is also included in the Reading program at Fredericksburg City Public Schools. From the use of drawing games, crosswords, videos and songs teachers help students to remember vocabulary and the various parts of grammar. They are able to put their knowledge to work when they, in coming years, read poems and then relate the poem to their lives. In high school, teachers continue in this attention-grabbing method of teaching by reading plays, like “The Crucible” and then allowing the students to act out their own version.

Chalk Talk: How to Motivate Summer Reading

Sunshine, sleeping-in, and playing seem to dominate some children’s minds in the summer. However, this is also a great time to keep them reading. One way to encourage this activity is to work with the child to set a summertime goal of reading so many books. Have smaller milestones within this goal and reward them for reaching each one. As they reach a goal, perhaps an ice cream cone or a new book can be used as a reward. At the end of the summer, a pizza party would be a great celebration. When the child sees that they can enjoy books away from school, they could just become life-time readers.
