Chalk Talk: Family-Paired Reading

One way that a parent can help a child to increase their fluency in reading is to take part in family-paired reading. This method calls for the child to choose a book that they are comfortable reading. They then sit down with the parent and begin reading until they make a mistake. At this point the parent joins in reading until the child signals that they are ready take over again. This continues for about 15 minutes or longer if the child is older. After they finish reading, the parent and the child talk about what they read, then the parent needs to praise the child for any improvements that have been made or for letting the parent know when they wanted to take over again. By doing this nightly, the child will improve in fluency and comprehension skills.
