Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Garland District Curriculum

Oral ability is a part of the language arts curriculum at Garland schools. This begins as young as kindergarten when children are asked to share their favorite story, or to show and tell. As the children enter early elementary, they are then asked to present, orally, a book report or to answer questions aloud. In middle and high school this progresses to research reports that may be given in small groups. Students may take Debate or Speech where they learn about voice, extemporaneous speaking or interviewing techniques.

The science curriculum at Garland schools starts the student off with science by presenting a few basic facts about the things that are in a student’s life already, such as the seasons. After these basic lessons students then learn more about the world around them through laboratory work and observation. In middle school, students study topics such as energy resources, or the relationship between organisms and their environment or about science concepts in their lives.

Texas Tutors

Each person learns in different ways, and finding the right way to present the information is the key. As a tutor, I guide the students to find information to help them understand concepts.
The most fundamental goal of a teacher is to foster learning. Therefore, my philosophy of teaching is founded on my strong desire to share my passion for mathematics and statistics with those who are interested in the field and to create a passion in mathematics and statistics for those students who are not interest in the field. As an educator, I need to be aware of learning, behavior, motivation and development theories in order to relate to my students and to engaged my students to achieve their full potential.
As a student, the best teachers as I remember are the ones that had passion and made the lesson interesting. They really cared about what they were teaching and made a sincere effort to assess their student’s learning capabilities as a group and at an individual level.

Chalk Talk: Causes for School-Anxiety in Children

Most people have felt anxious about something in their lives. This can also be the case with a child. They may be afraid of the first day in a class, a grade or a school. If this is the case, a parent can talk with the child and let them know that it is normal to feel anxious and perhaps share tactics that the parent has come up with to deal with this feeling. Children can also feel anxious about failure, whether it is about the difficulty of schoolwork or answering questions, this is, once again, a normal feeling. As a parent, praise the child for their best effort with their work, this builds confidence. If a child is suffering from social anxiety they may be afraid of what others will think of them so they will not fit in. Encourage the child to face each of these situations and talk with them about ways to make friends.
