Gary District and Curriculum

The Gary Community School Corporation follows the curriculum prescribed by the Indiana Department of Education and follows a GCSC program. Along with education regarding sciences and technology the schools also provide students with opportunities in the fields of visual and performing arts. Mechanical shops, science labs, a student-run bank and a student-run zoo are also facilities that are provided so that students acquire knowledge regarding a wide range of topics. Additionally, the Gary Public Library System consists of several branches and provides students with free access to a wide base of information.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Gary District Curriculum

The Mathematics curriculum has been designed in such a way that the students are able to understand the logic behind the calculations and apply it outside the classroom. The English program develops the interest of the students and allows them to use their imagination. It also develops students’ skills in reading, writing and focusing their energy on creative purposes. The Science curriculum facilitates the development of primary concepts in such a way that it interests the students to study advanced science.

The Language Arts curriculum is focused on not only teaching language principles, but using it as a tool to advance learning of all subjects. From early grade levels, students are taught how to communicate their thoughts clearly and concisely through public speaking exercises. Students are also taught an extensive reading and writing program that utilizes both fiction and nonfiction texts. Students are expected to developing diverse writing habits that are geared to different contexts such as informative, persuasive, and literary styles.

Keeping Informed: Recent Gary Educational News

  • Alternative Education - The role of Alternative Learning Programs was established to give special attention to the specific needs of at risk students. They have been designed to make sure that students are guided in the right direction and given a chance at success in an educational setting that works.
  • Education and Outreach - A Gary Community School instructor, along with his students, refurbished a van that was donated to a family in need. The vehicle, which is a 1993 Chevrolet van, was completely refurbished and displayed at the Industrial Clinic of the Gary Career Center. This served as a great way to teach kids hands-on skills while also showing them how their work can make a difference in someone else's life.
  • Parents' Night - Gary Community School Corporation regularly organizes Parents' Night where they inform the parents about the upcoming events - both academic and extracurricular. During the workshop, community members share their knowledge and strategies to help foster student success.

The Gary Area Career Center works with students in the Gary Community School Corporation. It helps eleventh and twelfth grade students from Gary high schools to explore job opportunities. With the help of the teachers, the students are guided, so they are able to choose the appropriate fields according to their aptitudes. It is the belief that once in the right field; a student can achieve much greater professional success than they would have in a different field.
