Chalk Talk: Why Students Need to Learn Social Studies

The study of history, geography, economics, and government is far more than learning about long-dead people and events that happened long ago. Social studies focuses on events of the past, to be sure. However, by examining the past, we gain a better understanding of why our world is the way it is today. Giving context to our current world, social studies helps inform us of the decisions we can and should make, and warns us of those we should not make as well. Studies in history give us insight into people unlike ourselves, while geography helps us better understand how we interact with and impact the environment around us. Economics helps us determine the best steps to take to ensure our financial security, while government teaches us the rights and responsibilities we have as citizens in a democracy. Students need exposure to these concepts and ideas so they can make informed decisions that will be beneficial to them today and for generations to come.
