Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Glenwood Springs District Curriculum

The district’s curriculum is research-based and its development is driven by student performance data. Standards and benchmarks are vertically aligned to ensure that as children move from grade to grade, they acquire knowledge and skills that build upon what they learned in earlier grades and coursework. In addition to providing guidelines for teaching and learning in core and elective areas, the district’s curriculum also includes many special learning opportunities.

Expanded curricula include Enrichment Wednesdays. After an early release, students are allowed to participate in extended learning courses offered by local volunteers that include lessons in art, history, music, and a host of other exciting subjects. The district also offers special learning opportunities for advanced students as part of their Gifted and Talented Program. Accelerated course options are available for students who require an increased academic challenge.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Character Education Programs

Many school districts have begun implementing character education programs into their overall curricula. Partly in response to bullying, these programs were initially developed in order to promote a more positive school environment. However, these programs, which encourage honesty, empathy, and acceptance of others, have been shown to have added benefits for students. Schools with a character education component report improved attendance, a reduction of discipline referrals, and less violence. Students demonstrate increased patience and self-control, which facilitates a more calm and orderly class environment, as well as improved academic achievement. Many school districts focus on character development to ensure children have strong social skills, a sense of responsibility to self and others, and resilience to overcome life’s obstacles. This approach is beyond the academic curriculum and helps produce students who are academically and emotionally prepared to be successful in school and in life.
