Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Gloucester City District Curriculum

Teachers foster student development and achievement by creating a supportive environment in which all students can learn. Creative lessons that pique students’ interest are key to fostering a love of lifelong learning. Learning opportunities in the Gloucester City Public Schools are based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards, which ensures that all students are held to the same high academic standards.

The language arts curriculum includes a speaking and listening strand. The elementary strand focuses student learning on acquiring appropriate skills to engage in conversations with others. Students learn how to take turns speaking, how to add to the conversation by building off the points others have made, and how to actively listen while others are speaking. In middle and high school, students learn how to effectively deliver a speech, including how to use tone, intonation, inflection, eye contact and nonverbal cues to make the speech delivery engaging.

Community service is a great way to help one’s community and help one’s self all at the same time. People who serve provide a valuable service to members of the community who need assistance. Serving brings people together for the common good and strengthens community ties. Providing time to improve the community saves valuable community resources as well. For people who volunteer, they get great professional experience that looks good on applications for college and jobs, and also provides them with valuable practical skills. What’s more, volunteerism boosts self-esteem, reduces stress and fosters personal growth. Giving back isn’t just a great way to make the lives of others better, it’s a great way to improve one’s own life.
