Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Goose Creek District Curriculum
The South Carolina Board of Education has adopted the Common Core State Standards, and Goose Creek Public Schools strive to implement them in every classroom in both Math and Reading. The Math standards invite students to gain a greater depth of knowledge in fewer concepts in on year than in the past. The previous standards required students to focus on ten or more concepts in a year, but to a lesser extent so that the concepts must be revisited year after year.
Common Core English Language Arts focuses on reading and writing across the content areas. Rather than simply learning how to read and write, students must learn to synthesize what they read not only in their language arts classes, but in Science, Arts, and Social Sciences as well. The new standards ask students to learn at a higher intensity, but ask them only to master five or six concepts. Students graduating from South Carolina High Schools will be prepared for academic success in all disciplines as a result of the Common Core State Standards.

- High School Years Advisory Newsletter - The Advisory Newsletter is published by the district for parents and families to help them find ways to promote learning at home, learn about upcoming programs, and initiatives such as the goals for the districts' character education plans/
- Visual Arts Department Programs - The Visual Arts Department has a great range of courses that can help students develop their technique and their understanding of aesthetic principles. The department has more than a dozen courses and gives students opportunities to exhibit their work as well.
- Goose Creek Students Invited to Help Design New High School - Current and Future Goose Creek High School Students are invited to give input in design elements of the new high school. High School and Middle School students may submit their entries and ideas. Contest winners may be invited to design review meetings and to shadow members of the committee as they work on their designs.

Chalk Talk: Choosing a College Major
When entering college, it is difficult for many students to decide on a major. Help your child by inviting him or her to explore different options based on his or her interests. Taking one class in several disciplines may help narrow down the choice. Encourage your child to spend a few days shadowing people in the different professions of interest and ask questions about how they arrived at their current professional destination. Also, suggest your child find out who the better professors are and try to take courses with them. Set your child up for success by setting standards high and helping them set achievable goals.
