Chalk Talk: Why Math Skills Are Essential

Math is not just something that kids learn and use in school. Its relevance and importance to daily activities makes it a subject that is crucial for students to learn and master. There are everyday tasks that require math, such as determining a tip, ensuring there is enough money to make a purchase, and managing time. Math can be used to determine the true cost of a major purchase by calculating taxes or interest fees when using credit. Kids can also use math to improve their nutrition by counting calories or measuring ingredients when cooking. There are also the life skills students acquire in math that are so important – analysis, problem solving, and perseverance among them. Beyond that, students who study math and become good at it will themselves raise children who are good at math. Getting over the fear of not doing well in it, or any subject, means kids are much more likely to pass on positive attitudes about that subject to their own kids.
