Grand Rapids District and Curriculum

When it comes to choices, Grand Rapids area schools present parents with many different options for their child’s education. The largest school district in the city, Grand Rapids Public Schools, offers a variety of learning experiences including Montessori and career-based learning. Four other great school districts surround the city, giving this region even more educational variety. Charitable organizations like the DeVos Foundation actively support these districts, allowing for new construction and growth to support student learning.

We currently cover the following Grand Rapids-area school district: East Grand Rapids Public Schools, Forest Hills Public Schools, Grand Rapids Public Schools, Kenowa Hills Public Schools, and Northview Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Grand Rapids District Curriculum

Learning at Grand Rapids Public Schools is guided by the district's Academic Plan which is based on the state's Common Core Standards. The Language Arts curriculum is characterized by using authentic literature to discover central themes and main ideas. Starting in the elementary grades, students will look closely at the text to find evidence that supports summaries and analysis of meaning. Vocabulary and phonics skills are also taught with the goal that all students are proficient, independent readers.

The Mathematics curriculum is rooted in real-world applications and the expectation that students can apply the mathematics they learn to everyday life and the workplace. Problem solving is an important part of this learning and success is measured by both accuracy and fluency. Perseverance is an explicitly stated student outcome and students are expected to have mastery over math concepts that will allow them to be successful in many different careers.

Chalk Talk: What Is Montessori Education?

Montessori education is named for Italian educator Maria Montessori who pioneered an innovative approach to child development in the early 20th century. This classroom style is different in several ways. First of all, Montessori classrooms have mixed-age groups and are organized with open blocks of time where students receive guidance in pursuing learning objectives they have chosen. While most classrooms focus on direct instruction, the Montessori style emphasizes learning through discovery. The teacher's role is to act as a guide as students make choices on their own. Many school districts operate Montessori schools and this teaching style is here to stay.
