Chalk Talk: Helping your Child Prepare for the SAT or ACT

Standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT can be frightening. Students spend a lot of time during high school talking to their friends and preparing for these tests which are often used to determine their educational future. Test scores are important. However, be aware that each college uses test scores differently and no college makes admission decisions based solely on a student’s test scores. A student’s academic record is also reviewed and used as an indicator for a student’s potential success in college. The best advice you can give your child is to study hard and read, read, read. Reading will help strengthen both their comprehension and vocabulary skills. Also, make sure they practice their writing. Suggest that they take challenging and advanced placement courses in high school. Recommend that your child take numerous practice tests which are available on-line or in books. Your child can also take a specialized course through their school or from a local tutoring company that focuses on effective test taking strategies and raising SAT and ACT scores. Finally, make sure your child has a good night sleep and a nutritious breakfast before the exam. Stay calm, positive and encouraging.
