Greenwood District and Curriculum

Greenwood Public Schools endeavor to give each child an independent future. This is done by helping the child succeed and placing academics ahead of everything else. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Greenwood District Curriculum

Reading is a valued subject area to the Greenwood Public Schools. In the early years, students are introduced to both fiction and non-fiction books in the classroom through the Reading First program which sets as its goals to have each student up to the correct grade level in reading by the third grade. By the middle school years these student have the ability to choose a book and share its genre, point of view, mood, main character, conflict solutions and main events. This gives a good foundation for these students to go into high school and beyond with a joy of reading.

The students of Greenwood Public Schools are presented mathematics in a method that enables them to find uses for this subject in all areas of the curriculum. Beginning in kindergarten children are shown strategies to help them become better problem-solvers and help them become higher-order thinkers. Each of the schools also use technology to teach this subject, including the use of Promethean Activboard and computers.

Chalk Talk: Effective Use of the Internet For Children

It is unusual to find a child that is not impacted by technology in some way. Many students have their own computers. The question is how to help children to use their computer is the best way, educationally. Most schools today require work that is done on the computer to use a specific word processing program. Once it is uncovered which program this is, make sure that it is installed on the computer that the child uses. There are also instructional videos on-line which have been created to help students understand a subject area better, whether it be a science fair project, or how to master long division. There are also many educational sites which help train a student's brain but while having fun. By introducing these ideas to a child, they can look at education in a different way.
