Greenwood District and Curriculum

Greenwood Public Schools seek to educate all students to become responsible and productive students. The Greenwood Schools apply the Common Core State Standards to reach each student in Math and Language Arts. Other academic courses use a similar structure by which the subject is taught based on the major topics involved and students move from the fundamentals to advanced work by the time they graduate.

We currently cover the following Greenwood-area school district: Greenwood Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Greenwood District Curriculum

Students are expected to understand concepts to a greater depth than in the past in their math classes. They spend extra time on fewer ideas in a school year so that they master the concepts resulting in less review time in the future. This creates greater understanding of each aspect of the standard because students become experts before the next standard is taught. In high school, algebra and geometry are particularly emphasized and a major feature on college admissions tests students may take.

In English Language Arts students read and write about both literature and non-fiction. They are able to synthesize and write about subjects across the content areas including not only English, but also Science and Social Studies which will give them the skills they need to be successful in the real world. Writing is also a big part of the curriculum and students are asked to write creative pieces, narratives, expository and persuasive essays. These different styles are all instructed upon so that students have range in their writing voice.

Chalk Talk: Making Children Accountable for Their Success

If your child is struggling in school perhaps it is because they are not being accountable for their success. Sometimes children struggle due to disorganization and poor time management. Help your child come up with three goals with specific actions to help them become more organized such as “I will make note of all homework in a calendar and double check the calendar when packing my backpack each day.” Have the child write the goals in their own handwriting and both the parents and the child can sign the page like a contract. Revisit this page often and make changes as your son or daughter achieves his or her goals.
