Grimsby District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Ontario Curriculum is used to guide and organize the instructional process in the local schools. It uses grade level expectations of the skills and knowledge that students should develop to ensure that all students are receiving a thorough foundation in their core learning. The expectations build upon each other over the years so that students begin with fundamentals and develop the ability to do analytic work in all subjects. Students are further engaged through unique programming that allows students to explore their individual areas of interest. The school districts are also committed to preparing students for the future by designing educational programming that facilitates college and career readiness.

We currently cover the following Grimsby-area school districts: Niagara Catholic District School Board and District School Board of Niagara.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Grimsby District Curriculum

Core subjects of English, Math, Science, History, and International Languages provide the essential framework for learning. Each area has developed programs beyond the standard courses to promote student achievement in the areas of their interest. There are programs in Media and Communication emerging from the English curriculum. Math and Science educational opportunities in technology, engineering, and environmental science have all been developed. Language Immersion and International Education supports the intercultural learning that students may seek as a cornerstone of their education.

All the subjects also promote the development of critical thinking skills that are required for post-secondary success. Students learn how to analyze and evaluate information, conduct research, test hypotheses, and solve all sorts of mathematic and scientific problems. These skills are built over the years, through a step-by-step process laid out in the subject-area frameworks.

Chalk Talk: What Is Differentiated Instruction?

Differentiated Instruction is an approach teachers use in the classroom to support student learning. It is one of many approaches that can be used, and it is primarily employed for group work. Differentiated instruction means grouping students in certain ways to effect certain outcomes. For instance, a teacher may place students of the same abilities in a group so that they are able to process through the same information towards subject comprehension. Or, a teacher may group students with varied abilities so that students may learn from others while working on a project.
