Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hammonton District Curriculum

The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards have been adopted by districts across New Jersey in order to ensure that students acquire the knowledge and skills they will need in order to be successful members of our society. Students receive a well-rounded education in core subjects like math, language arts, science and social studies, as well as skills and interest-based subjects like health and physical education, the arts, 21st Century life and careers, technology and world languages.

A central part of the language arts curriculum is acquiring the ability to read informational texts. The informational reading strand seeks to ensure that students have the critical reading and comprehension abilities they will need to be successful in post-secondary educational and career pursuits. Students begin by asking and answering simple questions about key details in a text. More advanced skills are emphasized, with students learning how to integrate knowledge from multiple sources in order to develop their understanding of a subject.

Chalk Talk: Advantages of Vocational Training

With the cost of college continuing to rise, vocational training is becoming a more viable option for many students. Vocational education has many advantages in addition to being a shorter program of study and being much more cost effective than a four-year college degree. Students gain valuable hands-on experience in the classroom that is relevant to their future career. With this focus on specific job skills, when they graduate students already have familiarity with the tools and processes of the job. Since students graduate with this knowledge, finding work is much easier. In fact, students who graduate from a vocational or technical school have a much easier time finding employment than do students who graduate with a four-year college degree.
