Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hamtramck District Curriculum

Students start each unit with a read aloud book that illustrates the strategy being taught. The teacher uses a script to read the book that contains stopping points for discussion and reflection. A major part of the program involves students partnering up to discuss questions or make predictions for the rest of the story. There is also a workbook for students to use in which they write responses to different parts of a story as well as summaries of what they have read.

The middle school Language Arts curriculum takes what students learned in elementary school and applies it to more complex literature selections. Students will read whole novels that often are chosen because they illustrate a common literary theme. Some of the themes students will learn about include man vs. nature, man vs. himself, and man vs. man. While reading the novels, students will have discussions in class and usually have questions to answer after each chapter.

Chalk Talk: English as a Second Language

English as a Second Language, or ESL, is a program found in most schools across the country. The goal of an ESL program is to help students from other countries become proficient enough in the English language to succeed in school. The students who receive ESL services are from varied backgrounds and come to American schools with differing levels of the English language. Some may be able to speak English quite well, while others may not know a single word of our language. The services for ESL students will vary as well based on their abilities. Students can be in a self-contained ESL classroom where they receive intensive instruction with other students who have no experience with the language. Other students may be in the general education classroom most of the day and only receive moderate instruction for a half hour each day. As our country continues to become diverse, ESL services will become an important part of school systems.
