Chalk Talk: Benefits of Extracurricular Activities

Getting your child involved in extracurricular activities, be that sports, clubs, or some other activity, is an excellent way to promote your child’s growth and development. Activities that get your child up and moving promote improved health and help children gain an understanding of why being physically active is so important to overall health. Extracurricular activities also teach valuable skills. Children learn how to communicate effectively, work well with others, and set attainable goals. Out-of-school activities can promote the development of creativity as well. Students learn how to think outside of the box and solve problems in novel ways. Activities are also a great stress buster. Given a few minutes to run, play, and have fun, students can more easily let go of the stressors of the school day. The social benefits are another positive aspect of participating in extracurricular activities. Children can interact with other kids they may not know and build new friendships.
