Highland Park District and Curriculum
The School District of the City of Highland Park offers students education through three public charter schools. Although Highland Park schools are charter schools, each school’s curriculum aligns with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), as well as the Kent County Collaborative Core Curriculum (KC4). The KC4 meets the Michigan Curriculum Framework (MCF) benchmarks and consists of nearly ten standards per grade level per content. Instruction highlights foundational skills and core subject mastery to prepare students subsequent learning, and college and/or career readiness.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Highland Park District Curriculum
The curriculum specifically focuses on reading and mathematics, per the CCSS and KC4. Upon enrollment, students take a pre-test for reading and mathematics—the STAR Diagnostic Testing Program. This pre-test determines students’ learning and teachers’ instructional objectives. From this portfolio snapshot, students receive a customized plan to gain skills in weak areas. Through a post-test, students demonstrate academic growth. GWCA pulls its science, social studies, physical education, art, and music curricula from the KC4 standards, MCF, National Math-NCTM, and Science AAAS Project 2061. Students also have access to computer technology, Spanish, 21st century technology, and other supplemental resources.
The Highland Park Public School Academy System uses standards-based instruction at all levels. Following the KC4, CCSS, and College and Career Readiness Standards, the system offers students rigorous core instruction necessary to succeed beyond the classroom. The HPRA PreK-8 campus offers students a foundational education in science, social studies, mathematics, English language arts, art, music, and physical education.

- McGregor Public Library - The McGregor Public Library offers a wide range of literacy services to the community from children's story hours to internet research resources for adults. The librarians can also help patrons find information on local courses, community organizations, and learn about the different technological resources available.
- Highland Park Schools Get Second Chance - Before 2012, The School District of the City of Highland Park ranked lowest of all schools in the state of Michigan. Their schools were in disrepair, money was mismanaged, and students were failing in many areas. In August 2012, the Leona Group, LLC took over, establishing charter schools to replace the district-led schools. Since this takeover, many facets of the schools have seen improvements.
- MMC Graduation Requirements - The HPRA high school campus prepares students for post-secondary goals by adopting the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) graduation requirements. These requirements consist of the following credits per content area: mathematics (4); English language arts (4); science (3); social studies (3); physical education and health (1); visual, performing, and applied arts (1); languages other than English (2); and an online learning experience.

While organizing and running a charter school is a difficult and complex task, it can be done under supported circumstances. In most educational crises, emergency management groups establish or reorganize charters. Regardless of the situation, parents can do much. Community members should attend meetings, voice opinions, and volunteer to help throughout the year. Providing quality educational opportunities for all students is hard work, but everyone’s well-being rests on the shoulders of the upcoming generation.
