Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hilliard District Curriculum

Learning is based on applying certain theories or models such as Constructivism where students construct knowledge or meaning by interpreting, evaluating, analyzing, synthesizing and organizing. Teachers strive to help students master learning through inquiry based methods of asking relevant questions such as what should the student be able to do and what experiences would help the student to achieve the necessary objectives of higher learning.

English Language Arts programs focus on helping students in primary levels to read out loud to develop literacy, comprehension, and understanding of the content while being able to apply the information to their environment. English courses prepare students to become skilled and effective communicators. Math programs progressively assess the student’s ability to learn how to problem solve using fractions, statistics, and measurement while thinking critically and logically using the appropriate methods and theories that they can apply in daily life.

Chalk Talk: Arriving at a Thesis Statement

Students in the senior grades are expected to master the use of the English Language and its functionality with respect to writing different types of compositions, essays, and reports which require critical thinking, planning and rhetorical analysis even research. Writing essays can be a creative process but for some students it poses a frustration of how to actually put the essay together and structure the essay to reflect coherence, clarity and appeal to the audience. First, the student must select a topic and narrow it in order to tighten the focus so that the essay does not become too broad in its arguments. Next the student must do his research on the topic if necessary and write some creative points out through free-flowing brainstorming. The outline is the next stage where the student comes up with the points for the introduction, thesis, body and closing. The thesis is always the tricky part because it requires a strong argument based on the topic and means of proving this throughout the essay. Using statistics, personal experiences, factual evidence and other sources can help to back up the arguments.
