Hobbs District and Curriculum

The Hobbs Municipal School District is responsible for the public schools in Hobbs,
New Mexico. The mission of the district is to provide the best educational experience possible for its more than 9,000 students. To that end the district has incorporated both the Core Knowledge and Advancement Placement programs at all of the district schools so that students are thoroughly prepared for higher education.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hobbs District Curriculum

The Hobbs Municipal School District is implementing the Common Core Standards that have been approved by the State of New Mexico as educational standards for public schools. The standards help to ensure that no matter which school a student attends that the core curriculum will be the same. The District also employs the use of the Core Knowledge program which provides a back to basics approach to education. Core subjects include Mathematics, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies and Music.

Understanding technology is also a major part of the school curriculum as it prepares students for the 21st century. In English & Language Arts, students focus on learning on how to read, write, listen and speak with critical thought. Students learn the skills of critical analysis and become familiar with both informational text and literature. In Mathematics, students focus on learning basis core skills including computation, algebra, geometry, probability, measurement and statistics.

Keeping Informed: Recent Hobbs Educational News

  • Visit to the State Government - Seventeen students from Hobbs High School recently visited the state capital to see a behind the scenes look at how the government operates. Accompanied by the school principal, the assistant principal and a social studies teacher the group received a guided tour of the government workings in Santa Fe including sitting in on committee hearings and a confirmation hearing for former Space Shuttle pilot Sid Gutierrez.
  • Science Olympiad - Students from Hobbs High School recently competed in the Science Olympiad which was held at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico. The student team competed in written tests and skill demonstrations and managed to win the team championship winning against the ten other school teams in the regional competition.
  • Vintage Heizer Donations - The Heizer public school in Hobbs is reopening as the Hobbs Middle School. The staff of the new school has been actively looking for Heizer Hornet memorabilia. School alumni have answered the call and Hornet vintage items are arriving at the school. Heizer was open as a junior high school for 49 years then it became the Hobbs Freshman High School for several years and then it was closed. It has now reopened as the Hobbs Middle School.

The KidsZone at the Canada Science and Technology Museum is all about providing fun experiences for kids while learning about different aspects of the world of science and technology. There are games and challenging activities on how to become a forest fighter, solve crossword puzzles, games about early tricycles, a time machine game, and the invention gallery just to name a few. The Canada Science and Technology Museum is the largest museum of its kind in Canada and is dedicated to providing opportunities to understand and get involved with science in a hands on manner, both at the museum and on the website.
