Hoover District and Curriculum

The K-12 core curriculum for Hoover City Schools consists of Language Arts, Technology, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, World Languages, the Arts, Physical Education and other electives. Hoover City Schools follows the Alabama State Standards, an accredited curriculum designed to grant equity and access for all students.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ (NCTM) standards of problem solving, cognition and evidential thinking, communication using arithmetic, demonstration, and associations are the focal points of the math curriculum. These mathematic proficiencies include the development of mathematic reasoning and using a variety of problem-solving strategies with fluency and precision.

The English/Language Arts curriculum requires a vast amount of attention to reading and comprehending informational text and requiring an increased involvedness in literary analysis. The Language Arts curriculum lays out what a literate person in the twenty-first century can accomplish. Pupils who reach the academic benchmarks willingly undertake the close, attentive reading that is at the core of understanding and appreciating complex literature. Having efficacious literacy skills in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects will scaffold each student’s success in school and beyond.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hoover District Curriculum

Scientific comprehension for all Alabama students is the objective of Hoover City Schools’ K-12 science program. Beginning in the primary grades, the students are encompassed in ways to think critically and methodically. The accomplishment of being literate in science, however, is necessary if Alabama students are to meet the daily challenges of the twenty-first century. Recognizing this, the new Alabama Course of Study: Science (Bulletin 2005, No. 20) centers on scientific literacy and provides demanding content standards. It also presents hands on method of instruction of the fundamental science concepts. As the state and nation are contingent on science and technology, scientific literacy is progressively becoming the benchmark for the success of the children.

The Social Studies/History curriculum of this district focuses on shaping students to become well-educated, analytical philosophers who have the ability to make sound decisions in today’s society. Following Alabama State Standards, teachers instruct about the facts of past events in history, rather than simple memorization, to teach them to analyze and think critically about these events. This enables the students to be able to make informed decisions about today’s events, such as political happenings, economic issues, and government decisions.

Within a child lies a treasure trove of learning and teaching; inspirational teachers dig for these priceless nuggets and help foster a lifelong yearning for learning and making a difference in the world.
My teaching philosophy is simple: teach students not subjects. Ensuring all learning styles are met, I practice differentiated instruction daily. The most important aspect of education for me is to prepare tomorrow’s leaders today. I am a “think outside of the box” kind of teacher. I endeavor to meet all goals set forth by my administration, and working hand in hand with my peers, plan to continue to strive for excellence in my classroom and the betterment of every student’s life I touch.
Students will rise to the level of expectation. I teach students how the brain develops and becomes prepared to understand abstract concepts to learn math.
