Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hopatcong District Curriculum

Curriculum development in the schools is undertaken with the goal of equipping all students with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful students. Benchmarks for student learning have been established in each content area to ensure that students meet established proficiencies. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards guide the development of the district’s standards.

Students in the district are required to demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language. The world languages standard provides elementary students with instruction in Spanish. Once in middle school, students can choose to continue their study of Spanish, or take French or German. All three languages are offered at the high school level as well, where students can advance as far as level four or five, depending on the language. Honors and AP courses are also available. Students must be able to read, write and speak their foreign language fluently.

Chalk Talk: Getting the Most Out of Financial Aid

If you have a child heading off to college soon, now is the time to start thinking about the financial aid opportunities available to help you pay for their education. If you think you make too much money or that your child doesn’t have a good shot of getting financial aid, think again! Many opportunities exist even for families with incomes up to $180,000 per year. To begin, make sure you file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) early. Another great tip is to move money out of your child’s personal accounts and into a 529 College Savings Plan. The money in these plans is not considered in the FAFSA calculations, and therefore opens up more aid opportunities. These plans allow the deposits to grow tax-sheltered, and the withdrawals are tax-free so long as the money is used for educational expenses.
