Hopkinton District and Curriculum

The Chariho Regional School District follows Common Core Standards in Language Arts and Math, with the goal of integrating the skills taught in these courses into other subjects as well. Each subject is taught according to a framework that details the grade-level expectations of skills, knowledge and concepts that students should gain. In high school, beyond the core, there are many electives and career-oriented programs that can help students prepare for their post-secondary goals.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hopkinton District Curriculum

The curriculum lays out a comprehensive series of learning objectives and testable benchmarks to guide teaching and learning in all core subjects across the grade levels. Each subject is broken down into major strands, or topics, that students begin to learn the fundamentals of during elementary school and then are able to do advanced work in during high school. For instance, in Math, young students learn about patterns they are beginning to develop an awareness of algebraic concepts which they will access later.

The literacy skills developed in the Language Arts curriculum is meant to bring about critical thinking, analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of information strategies for students. The assigned readings are in all genres so that students understand the different purposes authors have for writing books and are able to recognize an authors’ intent. Research skills are also taught with an eye to ensuring students have ways to recognize the quality of information in books and online.
