Hudson District and Curriculum
The Hudson City School District has a mission to provide children with an interest in lifelong learning by providing an educational environment that stimulates the intellectual curiosity of each child. High educational standards and quality programs set by the district create a stimulating and challenging curriculum for students. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hudson District Curriculum
In English & Language Arts, the new rigorous standards focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking and the development of critical analysis skills. Both informational text and creative literature is provided as reading material. Students are then expected to be able to analyze the reading material in relation to other educational material and to their own lives. The standards of English literacy are also now applied to other coursework including Social Studies, History, Science and Technology classes.
In Mathematics, students concentrate on learning the basics of math literacy including computational skills, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics. Each grade level builds on the math skills learned in the previous grade so that students build their mathematical knowledge in a progressive and logical manner. A major emphasis is placed on providing students with mathematical knowledge that they will be able to use in the workforce and in college.

Keeping Informed: Recent Hudson Educational News
- ELA Night - An ELA night was recently held by the Hudson City School District for kindergartners through sixth grade to celebrate and promote literacy. The recent program celebrated the Amelia Bedelia reading series of books which were first created fifty years ago. The evening also included parent workshops, reading, and arts and crafts activities.
- Word of the Day - Students at the M.C. Smith Intermediate School (MCSIS) are learning new words each day. In an effort to increase academic vocabulary, each morning students listen to a word of the day which is chosen from a variety of academic books. Each word is spoken and defined and used in the proper context.
- Music in Our Schools Month - Students in the Hudson City School District recently celebrated the Music in our Schools Month with musical performances of vocal recitals, recorder concerts and an annual high school musical of “Once On This Island.” The musical featured students from both the junior and high school performing with a full orchestra.

Chalk Talk: Learning About Glass-Blowing
At the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis website children can experience virtual glass blowing with an interactive demonstration of how art glass is created. The interactive tool allows students to see what a hot shop looks like where glass is blown and then move through step by step through the process of blowing glass. Students learn how to color the glass, how it is gathered, and rolled, reheated, blown and swung into shape.
