Jefferson County School System places broad literacy goals as a priority for the district. In Language Arts, beginning in the elementary
grades, students are engrossed in a great amount of reading, writing, and all works of literary genres. Success in reading is vital in
all courses, and it is a top priority in this school system for all students to be on or above level in reading to succeed in all other
classes.
Much work is done to make this happen, as there are a variety of secondary programs to assist in this. Classroom teachers, reading
specialists, special education teachers, elective specialists, English Language Learner instructors, teacher assistants, and volunteers
all come together to work with the children in the area of Language Arts. Students who are below grade level are focused on in Reading
Recovery or Title I programs to help them be successful in their classes. Jefferson County Schools is dedicated to the academic

- Library Media - The Library System offers a vast range of literacy and technology services to students and families. The library has the most recent ebooks and other digital media available, and a range of academic databases that can only be accessed through the library's online resources. The library services available provide students with a strong educational base in research and will prepare them to use the resources available at college.
- Bronze Medal in Best High School Ranks - The US News and World Report has given a bronze medal to Shades Valley High School. The Jefferson County School System contains 13 high schools, all of which are high performing schools, and Shades Valley has been ranked in the nation as number 561. This is a wonderful accomplishment, which is based on test scores, improvement and adequate yearly progress, and college readiness assessments.
- Veterans Day - W. Jefferson Elementary celebrated its 14th annual Veterans Day celebration. Many veterans were invited to the school and given a ceremony by the children. The Veterans received small gifts and were treated to many songs sung by the students. The Veterans around the community were honored to be recognized in front of students and community members.
