Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Huntington District Curriculum

Huntington’s Primary and Intermediate Schools use the Treasure and Treasure Chest reading program, a research based reading language arts program which is aligned to the state standards. This curriculum provides a variety of high interest literature, explicit instruction and repeated practice which are proven to raise student achievement. In the elementary grades, the math standards provide basic learning in whole numbers, operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), shape recognition, patterns, fractions and decimals.

In Middle and High School, students are taught how to apply mathematical problems to real world situations. The Huntington Union School District is also home to a STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Math) Magnet school which provides inquiry-based, innovative learning programs in well-equipped science labs for students in grades 3-6. The district has recently developed a new science curriculum and has SMART technologies, which are interactive in nature, expanding in every school.

Chalk Talk: Why Arts Education Is Important to Children

Did you know that art and music education are mandatory in Japan – a country that consistently ranks among the highest in math and science in test scores? New brain research shows that the arts help improve skills in reading and math while promoting creativity, team-work and positive self-esteem. Based on these findings, innovative arts programs are emerging in a growing number of school districts across the country that integrate the arts into core curriculum areas. For example the “arts” can be used as a learning tool in Reading/Language Arts (reading, writing and performing a play, creating costumes and scenery) or Math (using musical notes to learn about fractions) or Science (Mixing Colors, Building Sets). The arts provide opportunities for self –expression, develop independence and critical thinking skills are a language that all people speak and understand.
