Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Huron-Kinloss District Curriculum

English is another foundation subject that is considered essential for learning. Students develop the ways of reading that allow them to understand many different styles of text and helps them to recognize various points of view. A way in which this is accomplished is by asking students to write personal and analytic responses to the texts, as well as helping them learn how to craft writing for a range of purposes.

Math has been designed in such a way that elementary school students learn basics in all facets of math - geometry, data measurement and analysis, proportions and some basic algebra. As students move into high school, the courses take a more in-depth approach to algebra, geometry, and data analysis which prepares students for advanced math courses and their courses in the sciences and technology. Students learn how to perform arithmetic operations on complex numbers, and also learn how to use complex numbers in equations. Student work with representing complex numbers, including using their operations on a complex plane.

Brain training is based on the theory of Neuroplasticity. The brain has the ability to build neurological connections and new neuropathways for improved adaptive responses or in academics improved problem-solving. Thinking, learning, and remembering recruits neurons to work together in groups. When one attempts a new task, associated neurons are incorporated into the “Thinking Process” to assist. Brain training has designed mental workouts that facilitate increased and improved brain activity. The mental exercises create and increase the strength and capacity of the brain. It is said to “rewire” the brain. To help the brain become more efficient. Just as keeping a muscle toned helps one to stay physically fit, working one’s brain helps to keep the mind alert, focused and bright
