Hyrum District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum in the Cache County School District is based on the new Utah Core Standards. The Utah Core uses research-based educational methods, and is based on nationally standardized goals for student success in college and careers after graduation. The major focus of the Utah Core is on preparing students to be able to apply the skills they use in their K-12 education after graduation. That means an explicit focus on problem-solving in all subjects and at all levels.

We currently cover the following Hyrum-area school district: Cache County School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hyrum District Curriculum

For early literacy education, for instance, this means that students are asked to read a text without a great deal of scaffolding, and are then encouraged to re-read or use resources like dictionaries to solve problems they had in understanding it. In Mathematics, this means that word problems and visual representations of solutions are emphasized, to make sure students have a clear understanding of the principles behind a mathematical process.

This emphasis on success after graduation means that students can select the courses that are most likely to help them to meet their goals. For students with specific career goals, Cache County offers the “Pathways” plans through high school, a state-wide program to help students follow a curriculum that provides essential career skills in areas such as engineering and business. Students with an interest in a college degree are encouraged to take a rigorous schedule of courses, including Advanced Placement and dual enrollment classes.

Chalk Talk: Career Choices

Many students spend time thinking about a prospective career in high school, or even earlier. The good news is that, regardless of what your career choice is, strong skills in the basic academic skills of reading, writing, mathematics, and scientific and historical literacy will serve you well. If you have a leaning in a direction, such as science, technology, or the arts, do take courses to help you explore those interests, but don’t limit yourself too early. No matter what career path you end up taking, being well-rounded will help you achieve success, and having mastered basic skills will help you keep your options open to follow new ideas to new places.
