International Falls District and Curriculum

Students in preschool through high school in International Falls attend public school in Independent School District 361. With an enrollment of just over 1,200 students, the district is quite small. Academics are a particular strength of District 361. Strong educational programs have been developed and implemented by highly qualified teachers. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the International Falls District Curriculum

Elementary students in International Falls take part in an arts curriculum that helps them develop an understanding of the artistic foundations of various art forms. In theatre, students explore a variety of theatrical styles, including those from Western and non-Western nations. In the visual arts, learners examine the essential characteristics of visual art, including line, value, shape, space, and texture. Students in dance courses discover the basic movements upon which dances are based.

The high school math curriculum in International Falls includes an in-depth study of geometry. Learners apply properties to right triangles to solve problems. Properties are also used to solve problems related to polygons. The concepts of sine, cosign, and tangent are explored as well. Students learn how to use these ratios to determine the length and area of right triangles. The coordinate system is also used, with students learning how to use coordinates to represent and analyze polygons as well as segments.

Keeping Informed: Recent International Falls Educational News

  • College Degrees Available - Beginning with the Class of 2017, Falls High School students will have the chance to earn an associate’s degree while remaining at the high school campus. Falls High School has partnered with a number of local colleges to make the program a reality. Students are able to pursue a course of study that will most support their college and career goals.
  • SchoolWay Keeps Parents Connected - ISD 361 now offers SchoolWay, an app that allows teachers, coaches, administrators, and other district officials to send push notifications to students and families. The app is available for iOS and Android devices. This is a great tool to keep families up-to-date on events in the district and to reduce the use of paper for announcements.
  • Northland Special Education Cooperative - ISD 361 is a member of Northland Special Education Cooperative. The purpose of the organization is to increase the number of resources available to special needs students in rural areas. Teachers and parents work with peers in other districts to discuss best practices, learning opportunities, and help families locate resources as needed.

Algebra and Algebra II are foundational pieces all high school students should have in their repertoire. Geometry is another important class for students to have under their belts. More advanced courses, such as pre-Calculus and AP Calculus are highly recommended as well.
