Inverness District and Curriculum

The schools attended by Inverness students all use the Illinois Learning Standards as the basis of their general curriculum. The ILS provides detailed learning expectations in all subject areas for each grade level. The objectives are written broadly so that teachers can use their creativity and understanding of their students to determine the best instructional method. Beyond core academics, social emotional learning and participation in community service are emphasized so that students develop interpersonal and collaborative skills.

We currently cover the following Inverness-area school districts: Barrington 220 School District, Community Consolidated School District 15, and Township High School District 211.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Inverness District Curriculum

The English language arts curriculum is based on Common Core Standards that call upon students to read critically, write for multiple purposes, and be effective communicators. The reading strand calls upon students to increase the amount of non-fiction that they read so that they become competent with evaluating information and are able to conduct original research using high quality sources. One of the primary goals of the curriculum is for students to be able to integrate knowledge across texts they read.

The Math curriculum is also based on Common Core Standards and focus on the major topics in math including numeracy and operations, algebraic patterns and relations, geometry and measurement, functions, models, and data analysis and statistics. Each of these topics are approached progressively so that students build skills each year and as they get to more advanced math they know the best way to solve the problems they are presented with. This study allows students to learn the problem-solving skills needed throughout their lives

Chalk Talk: College Applications

There are many types of college applications, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. Students who know where they want to go and what they want to study may benefit from some of the Early Decision and Early Action options. One type that has some of the fewest drawbacks is Early Action (EA). One drawback is that it’s due early, usually November 15th. This also means applicants should receive a decision before the end of the year. Early Action applications are nonbinding, which means students aren’t restricted in where they choose to attend college. Because they’re early, applicants compete against fewer other applicants, which leads to higher acceptance rates. Also, colleges tend to favor Early Action applicants, though not as much as Early Decision applicants.
