Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ivins District Curriculum
The Math curriculum under the Utah Core focuses on problem-solving and critical thinking skills. More than being able to mechanically solve a problem, the curriculum aims to make sure that students understand the principles behind a given mathematical process, and are able to see how it relates to other mathematical concepts. This follows best practices for mathematics education, and has as its goal making sure students have sufficient mathematical literacy.
For instance, early math is taught with an emphasis on manipulatives, physical objects that help students visualize mathematical processes; students are also asked to visualize problems by drawing pictures and diagrams to explain them. When students have mastered reading skills, they are given word problems to help them connect the structure of a problem to the actual operations. The basic principles of algebra, geometry, and statistics are introduced in elementary school, so that students will have a strong basis to build on.

- Science, Technology, and Arts at Red Mountain - Red Mountain Elementary is a STEAM school, meaning that it focuses on teaching science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics across the curriculum. This integrated way of teaching these subjects makes sure that students can see connections between types of subjects, and gets them excited about putting their new knowledge into practice. Students in all grades did hands-on science experiments on the annual Science Day, and look forward to days focused on the other fields that the school focuses on.
- Arts High School Community - Students at Tuacahn High School celebrated their close connections to their fellow classmates at their graduation. Only 56 students were a part of the senior class, which meant that students were able to build a community to support each other to learn and grow. Tuacahn is an arts high school, where students focus on the performing and visual arts, and was the first public charter high school in Utah.
- Learning Technology for Elementary Schools - Students at Red Mountain Elementary School have the benefit of educational technology such as iPads and smartboards. They and their teachers taught their parents about these new technologies at a Geek Peek night, which showed parents and community members how the technology assists teachers in all grades in creating an educational environment which benefits all students.

The arts are not merely fun for students, or a way to get them interested in creative expression. They also provide a way for students to improve in other subjects. A sense of rhythm and timing from music can improve students’ number sense, while visual arts can improve the spatial sense so necessary for working on geometric reasoning. Singing improves students understanding not only of rhythm but of how words work, and can improve literacy skills. Doing visual art projects, dance, and music can also help students improve their fine and gross motor skills, particularly in the early grades, which can help them do better with physical tasks relevant to their education.
