Jasper District and Curriculum

Greater Jasper Schools strive to prepare students to enter the workforce or higher education after graduation. General and specific knowledge will be gained in many areas, producing well-rounded students through the focus on core curricular expectations and by providing engaging courses for students. The school has a mandate to ensure that students achieve proficiency in their subjects, but of equal importance is that the district provides classroom and extracurricular opportunities for students to define their own interests.

We currently cover the following Jasper-area school district: Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jasper District Curriculum

Mathematics classes improve abstract reasoning skills and teach students to use certain tools. The curriculum builds upon previously learned skills in areas such as algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and calculus. Even in the elementary curriculum, mathematical thought is promoted and students are expected to make sense of whole numbers and to persevere in solving math problems using whole numbers. Kindergarteners will abstractly reason with numbers and show the ability to model with numbers. They will also express repeated reasoning using whole numbers.

The social studies curriculum has a similar goal and begins teaching students about their immediate surroundings starting in kindergarten. As they progress, students will expand their knowledge of their neighborhood, state and country, including the American government. World governments and other political systems will also be explored. AP and Honors courses are available in both mathematic and social studies, as well as in other areas.

Chalk Talk: The Summer Before College

You’ve gotten into college and graduated from high school with the entire summer ahead of you. Congratulations! Here are a few things you can do to fill your time wisely. First, if you haven’t already, consider applying for scholarships. There are many types of scholarships, with some being very specific and others more general. Some will ask for essays but there are also many that don’t. If you’ve done that, try awakening your inner bookworm. Is there a book everyone’s been raving about that you’ve really wanted to read? Do it now! Or try reading some classics or even just the daily newspaper. Keeping your mind engaged during the summer can really help when you go back to school. Another way to fill your time is through a summer job, an internship, or volunteering. Either of these is a great way to network or learn about potential careers. Speaking of careers, the summer is also a great time to research potential fields of work. There are many ways to make your summer a productive one but it’s also important to enjoy whatever you decide to do.
