Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jennings District Curriculum

The district is implementing the Common Core State Standards that have been approved for use in all public schools in the State of Louisiana. In Language Arts, students learn the English language through learning to read, write, speak and listen. Students build on their skills year by year as the reading and writing assignments become more complex. Skills such as reading for evidence, research and critical analysis help students write well documented writing assignments. Reading material includes both informational text and literature to support learning and prepare for post-secondary academics.

In Mathematics, the focus on is on learning at a deep level such core math subjects as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics and measurement. The goal is for students to be math literate by the time they graduate from high school with the ability to apply what they have learned to higher math or math problems encountered in real life.

Chalk Talk: Learn about Life on the Sea

There is nothing that brings historical happenings more alive than reading the personal words created in daily journal from someone who lived a long time ago. At the Girl on a Whaleship website created by the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, kids can read from a journal written by Laura Jernegan, a young girl who accompanied her family on a whaling ship. Written between 1868 and 1871, the journal started by the then six year old Laura chronicles the search for whales by Laura’s family including her father Captain Jared Jernegan as they sailed around Cape Horn looking for whales. In addition to the journal, there are photos of Laura and her family, letters, newspaper articles of the day, and ships logs that add to the personal account. A fascinating way to learn about whaling times and life on the sea in the late 1800’s.
