Both districts are committed to providing a comprehensive education that includes unique learning opportunities for children of all ability levels. The Thompson district offers International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement programs for high school students, a specialized school for children with exceptional artistic abilities, and schools with a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) focus.

We currently cover the following Johnstown-area school districts: Thompson School District and Weld County School District RE-5J.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Johnstown District Curriculum

Parents in the Weld County district can place their children in the district’s early childhood education program once their child is three years of age. Knowledge Quest Academy is a charter school in the district that provides K-8 students with advanced studies in core areas as well as music, art, and other exploratory subjects. Students in both the Weld County and Thompson districts participate in classes that are designed to be innovative, robust, and 21st century-focused.

High school students in both districts have a wide variety of career and vocational programs that introduce them to the latest and most in-demand career areas. In Weld County, helping kids learn the educational value of technology is of particular emphasis. All students in grades 4-12 are assigned their own iPad, which they can use to investigate potential careers and various vocations, and download apps and other tools that facilitate their learning. The school districts rely on the Common Core State Standards to guide curriculum development in language arts and mathematics.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Music Education

Children that participate in music classes gain many benefits. The simultaneous use of various skills, including listening, fine motor movement, and coordination of thought help students manage complex tasks in areas such as science and math. Music classes also facilitate language development, as children constantly practice and reinforce old and new words as they learn songs. Studies show that engaging in musical studies also boosts IQ by approximately three points. Improved standardized test scores have been correlated with music education as well. In fact, children who study music scored 22 percent higher in English and 20 percent higher in math on standardized tests according to a study by the University of Kansas. The overall appreciation gained for music, and how it supports thinking, is not lost on children and always beneficial to them.
