Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kansas City District Curriculum

Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools adheres to structured Pacing Guides that progressively teach students new skills in manageable increments. High School Science, for example, begins with Biology courses and then advances to Chemistry; High School Social Studies begins with U.S. History before moving on to the wider World History. The also use the following standardized tests, MAP, EXPLORE, PLAN, and ACT, to guage proficiency and achievement within the core subjects.

The Pacing Guides are used at Grades 6 - 12 for English, Science, Math, and Social Studies. At the elementary level, they are used for Literacy and Math. This kind of structured curriculum provides teachers and students alike with clear, defined goals specifying what students should learn and be able to do on performance-based measures. Whether the student's goal is to attend a university or trade school after graduation or if they prefer to enter the workforce, they will learn the necessary skills to become successful adults.

Chalk Talk: The Benefit of a Mentorship Program

Having a good academic mentor can have a profound effect on a student's performance at school. A good mentor not only takes time to tutor in those subjects the student needs supplemental help, they also offer invaluable life lessons for achieving a successful career and adulthood. A mentor helps a student to understand what type of person they want to become and the steps to achieve their goals, regardless of previous connections and expectations. Mentors and mentees form a bond of understanding, and mentees will be challenged and supported in their goals.
