The English Language Arts curriculum emphasizes critical reading and writing, as well as discussion, research, and presentation skills. The district curriculum focuses on analytic and reflective thinking skills through this subject and helps students gain the ability to interpret a wide range of literary genres. The writing curriculum helps students understand the process approach to writing so that they are able to brainstorm, draft, edit and revise their work before presenting a final essay or creative piece.

Economics is a central component of Kasson’s middle school social studies curriculum. Students learn how to create a monthly budget and use real-world experiences to maintain that budget to include enough money for expenses as well as savings. Different types of income are explored, including that from a job, profit from running one’s own business, and interest on savings. Essential features of the market economy are examined. Chalk Talk: Why Play Is Important for Education

Time for kids to play, particularly for kids in elementary grades, is important for their overall growth and development. Playtime in school is usually during recess, and while academic growth is usually not a byproduct of play, social and emotional growth definitely is. Play gives students a context in which to learn social rules. Additionally, playtime gives students a chance to learn how to effectively express opinions and point of views, while taking the views of others into consideration. Playtime is also beneficial for the development of confidence and self-esteem in young children. The growth of these social and emotional skills then lends to the growth of academic skills once students go back to the classroom.
