The Kaukauna Area School District (KASD) serves nearly 4,100 students residing near the northeast side of Appleton. The KASD follows the curricular requirements administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WDPI). In 2010, the WDPI adopted the Common Core State Standards for English language arts and mathematics. The KASD early learning center and both district elementary schools follow the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards (WMELS) and the CCSS. Residents also have access to two public charter elementary schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kaukauna District Curriculum

Riverview School, the district’s intermediate program offers required core courses, as well as required “encore” courses and optional encore courses. Required classes follow the Common Core, and required encore classes include physical education (6-8), art (6), health (7); sixth grade students must complete one music encore class as well. Optional encore courses include music, world languages, technology education, life skills, job skills, and computers.

Kaukauna High School (KHS) transitioned to a trimester schedule for the 2014-15 school year. Students’ schedules at KHS follow a tiered system, like the intermediate school. Freshmen must take the most core classes with less elective options, while seniors will take the least amount of core classes with the most elective options. Students must take English language arts and social studies all four years (seniors choose a social studies elective). Guidance counselors help students with post-secondary plans, whether students are planning for college or career.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Studying English Language Arts

English is one of the most common languages spoken globally, and most people understand it. Native English speakers often take their language for granted. When native speakers study foreign languages, they learn about conjugation, parts of speech, and other linguistic variables. However, many of these learners fail to realize that most of the same rules apply to English, and instead of dissecting its core and considering its intricate nature, young learners view English language arts as a chore of reading and writing. It is important to understand the rules of English. It is valuable to have a command of not only the spoken language, but also people who have command of the written language can communicate with purpose. People who communicate well are more likely to persuade an audience of their viewpoint. They can use their talents as a career and more likely to get the job they desire. Knowing how to use language is a skill that can lead to many opportunities.
