Chalk Talk: High School Transcripts

A high school transcript may be the most important part of an applicant’s application package. It contains a very few key pieces of information: the applicant’s grade point average (GPA) and the applicant’s course selection. These few things can give a lot of insight into an applicant’s work ethic, commitment to his/her studies, whether the applicant is willing to rise to a challenge, and overall intellectual curiosity. Because it is so important, it is often important for the applicant to build his/her application around the transcript. If there are seemingly weak spots, for example, like a bad grade in a class, the applicant might seek out a recommendation from that teacher to mitigate the grade, if possible. A narrative about that grade or class, explaining the student’s performance, what was done to help, and what the student has learned or gained from the experience.
