Chalk Talk: How to Avoid Sentence Fragments

A sentence fragment is a group of words that does not have a subject and a verb (predicate). It is not an independent clause, so the group of words is an incomplete thought. This usually happens when a sentence lacks a subject or a verb. To make a sentence fragment into a complete sentence, the missing subject or verb must be added or the sentence fragment can be joined to another sentence. Here’s an example: 'Sonya riding.' is a fragment. 'Sonya went riding." would be the corrected non-fragment version.
