Chalk Talk: How To Help Your Tactile Learner with School

So your child is a tactile learner? Do they need to touch something or have some sort of tactile connection to a topic to really learn it? In early grades, students have many tactile learning activities to assist in their learning process. But as your child progresses through school, chances are there will be fewer and fewer activities as the classroom environment becomes increasingly traditional. So how can you help your child learn anyway? Teach your child to relate whatever their learning to the real world. Do they have to remember a number combination? Have them type it out on a phone keypad to cement it into their brain. Do they need to remember a series of dates and events? Have them draw or create a timeline with memory joggers that they understand. Does your child need to memorize a theorem or understand a difficult math concept? Have them walk through the proof of it, and illustrate it. These and other strategies can help your tactile learner learn even in the most conventional classroom.
