Killingly District and Curriculum

Killingly Public Schools follow the Common Core State Standards. The district strives to identify their “power standards” in the subject areas. The power standards are a way for educators to identify and prioritize the standards for every subject at every grade level. By narrowing the large volume of standards, teachers are allowed time to teach, re-teach, differentiate and provide the students with an opportunity to gain in-depth understanding of the subject and its concepts.

We currently cover the following Killingly-area school district: Killingly Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Killingly District Curriculum

In each subject, the teachers focus on guiding student-centered learning. This paves the way for a higher understanding and depth of knowledge that will benefit all students. Hands-on practice, group work, and opportunities to make real world connections are emphasized within the curriculum. Students also learn ways to analyze information, participate in literary discussions, conduct research, and write well-organized essays.

The district has a commitment to providing a rigorous education for students. A teacher might begin a unit with basics that require a low level of thought process. As the content builds, so does the level of thinking until it reaches a level where students can analyze a problem and apply it to real-world situations. Teachers then work as a team to create common assessments, which is a way of providing an accurate reflection of student understanding and the strengths and weaknesses of an individual student or an entire class.

Chalk Talk: Technology Outside the Classroom to help Inside the Classroom

With the heavy workload put on many students in this country, many feel the need to tote their books, binders, folders, pens, pencils, even laptops to school with them each day. Their backpacks protrude off their backs a good two feet and can cause back and spinal problems. Heavy textbooks are becoming less common as some lucky school districts are able to provide e-books for their students in the form of issuing student iPads or other similar electronics with all of their books pre-loaded on the device. While this is an extra not yet available for all schools, it can provide a way for students to cut down dramatically on the weight they are forced to haul on their backs for hours each day. As technology advances and cost decreases, parents and teachers can look forward to lightening the load for their students both in the classroom and out of it.
