Kincardine District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Students from Kincardine are provided a range of educational possibilities through the curriculum which is used in the districts. The curriculum for each subject guides the instructional planning process, provides the rationales and expectations for student learning, and offers a tool by which to create the measurements students are required to take throughout the province. It prepares students for any number of programs offered during both the elementary and secondary school years. In Language, students are expected to develop the types of literacy and communication skills that will help them be critical thinkers and will help them acquire knowledge in other subjects. Reading strategies that lead to understanding, analysis and interpretation, recognition of point of view, and question generation are all part of the curricular expectations.

We currently cover the following Kincardine-area school districts: Bluewater District School Board and Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kincardine District Curriculum

Math and Science have been organized so that students learn basic skills and procedures during their elementary years and are exposed to hands-on learning in these subjects. In middle and high school, the topics within each subject like Algebra or Biology become full year courses and students are expected to master more content while honing their procedural and investigative skills. Technology is also a part of the learning in Math and Science, and these subjects are often integrated so that students have tools that they can engage the subject matter with.

Beyond the core classes, there are opportunities like International Baccalaureate, Career and Technical Education, Environmental Programs, Language Programs all which require a strong foundation of literacy and communication strategies to take on the learning goals central to each. The expectations of such programs at the secondary level requires that students have the fundamentals in place to understand the content, skills, and concepts which will be taught.

Chalk Talk: Sports and Education

It can sometimes be difficult to reach certain students, but surprisingly, sports can be incorporated into school to keep them interested. Sports especially can be useful in math class, where sports statistics can be integrated. Teachers can also use sports in word math problems involving operations; for instance, they can figure out how many more goals one team or player scored than the other. To get students directly involved, teachers can have them bring in newspaper clippings involving scores and stats from local sports teams. Another idea is for students to measure the length of their school's field and compare it to the playing fields used in pro sports leagues. Additionally, boys often dislike reading, so it can be beneficial to allow them to read books about sports--at least to start with--and encourage them to read such books in their spare time.
