Kirksville District and Curriculum

All Kirksville Public Schools are guided by “The Common Core State Standards.” Grade-level specific academic benchmarks are clearly stated for students, parents, teachers, and the wider Kirksville community. These standards are not theoretical or abstract ideas about education, but itemized statements of academic accomplishments to be achieved at the K-12 levels relevant to the real world. Success in college and the world of work in a global economy ultimately guide Kirksville education.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kirksville District Curriculum

The intent of Mathematics in Kirksville Public Schools is to return to conceptual strength from often-mechanical presentations in past textbooks. Place values and the laws of arithmetic are organizing principles. In the early grades, students concentrate on whole number operations and relationships, elementary geometry, and measurement. At the Junior High and Senior High levels, algebraic principles, geometry, and data analysis are primary foci.

The English Language Arts Standards cover literacy in language, history-social studies, science, and technical subjects. From recognizing and naming letters through the writing of sophisticated research papers, students are taught to read, write, speak, and listen in various types of settings and eventually acquire specialized language in technical and vocational areas. Applicability is a common thread weaving through the K-12 Language Arts curriculum. A second integrating principle is “reasoning,” learning to think through problems and issues with increasing complexity.

  • Kirksville Part of A+ Program - By attending senior high school regularly – at least 90% of the time, achieving a 2.5 Grade Point Average, and receiving tutoring, Kirksville seniors can earn scholarships to Missouri community colleges, trade or technical schools. This can benefit many young people who either couldn’t afford higher education or who aren’t quite ready for a four-year college. The potential scholarships will hopefully motivate an increasing number of students to be at school every day and do their best work.
  • Kirksville Technical Center - Kirsksville school and community leaders are deeply concerned about the secondary-level students who are not immediately headed to traditional higher education or who might potentially droop out of high school before graduating. At the Kirksville Technical Center, a separate school district edifice, students can receive vocational training of assorted types which affords direct entry into the skilled labor force upon course completion and high school graduation.

Chalk Talk: Finding the Right Extracurricular for Your Child

Once children are in middle and high school, they begin to have a great many options for extracurricular activities - and they should take the chance to join at least one as early as possible. It's important for younger students get a sense of how to engage and participate in group events or causes, and to make this successful, being considerate of the child's true interests will go a long way. It is important to help guide them to a choice that really speaks to them rather than letting them join a group just because a friend is. The options tend to be between academic extracurriculars, community-based outreach groups, hobbyist groups, creative outlets, and cultural groups. Discussing future goals and ambitions can help a child determine what group might be good to join, and then it's just a matter of sticking with it!
