Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kirtland District Curriculum

The Central Consolidated School District has recently undertaken to rewrite a customized school curriculum for all grades based on the adoption of the State approved Common Core Curriculum Framework. In English, students focus on becoming literate in English including reading, speaking, writing and listening. Reading material in the curriculum includes both informational texts such as an individual might use on the job and literature. Students learn to develop skills such as critical analysis and evidence reading which is used for research, writing and reading comprehension activities.

In Mathematics, students are focused on the core subjects of computational skills, algebra, geometry, probability, proportional reasoning, measurement and statistics. Students learn to apply their math skills to real everyday problems and to learn when to use particular math skills to new problems. Common Core curriculum places an emphasis on Mathematics and English and Language Arts and helping students prepare for college and the workforce.
