Lafayette District and Curriculum

The Boulder Valley School District follows the Colorado Academic Standards as the guidelines for student learning across schools in the district. The curriculum lays out a clear path for learning in each subject, the types of critical thinking skills that students can expect to develop, and the types of connections to real world applications that each subject has. Students are encouraged to pursue a course of study based on their interests but that is also founded in core academic learning.

We currently cover the following Lafayette-area school district: Boulder Valley School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lafayette District Curriculum

The Math curriculum begins with an introduction to the fundamentals including patterning, shape recognition, measurement and other topics. Mathematics learning in the later grades focuses on building problem solving and reasoning skills and teaching students how algebra, geometry and data are used in mathematical decision making. Students also learn about topics that integrate math and technology, learn how to work with algorithms and see real world applicability in these lessons.

In Language Arts, students learn how to identify character traits from stories and write journal entries about the characters, listen to their teacher read an informational text describing parts of speech, compare and contrast using venn diagrams, and write a multi-paragraph essay about the characters using graphic organizers. Students learn how to organize their ideas for longer writing such as research projects and are able to use these skills in all their courses.

Chalk Talk: School Community Partnerships

School community partnerships are a valuable asset for a school district and can lead to a great increase in opportunities for students. These partnerships can serve many purposes from donation of equipment, to providing volunteers to work with students in the classroom, or sponsoring an extracurricular activity. School community partnerships also can provide students with internships and other work learning experiences that can be a critical asset as they prepare to graduate. Mentoring programs can also be supported through school community partnerships and children are able to benefit from the additional role models in their life. As the opportunities to establish such partnerships present themselves, parents and educators can make a big difference by creating these ventures.
