Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lafayette District Curriculum

The Science curriculum includes a wide spectrum of topics with a structured teaching program that combines theoretical study with practical experiences, which enable students to understand the subject. For instance, as part of the physics portion of the elementary science curriculum, students learn about mechanics and motion. Students observe how an object’s motion changes depending upon the forces acting upon it, and discuss gravity’s influence on how objects behave in motion. The objectives of the study of mathematics are best achieved by a diversity of learning experiences, including those directly related to curriculum.

Lafayette School’s English Language curriculum focuses on proper use of language in speaking and composition writing and appreciation for various types of literature. The basics of the writing process are studied at each grade level. The teachers make great efforts to help students struggling with the subjects. Their philosophy is to motivate students to learn and actually enjoy the learning process.

Chalk Talk: Learning Another Language

Opposed to the general belief that some people have an aptitude for learning foreign languages, recent studies conclude that there is no compelling evidence for this premise. The good news is that anyone can learn a foreign language quickly if they follow the right technique. The most-tried and tested method is the immersion technique in which students learn a new language through intensive exposure to it. Students are thus able to pick key phrases and words and learn grammar.
